Izotope Rx Dialogue Denoise

Denoise is designed to reduce stationary noise, including broadband noise, in audio signals. Stationary noise can include tape hiss, microphone hum, power mains buzz, camera motor noise and other types of noise that do not change in level or spectral shape throughout the recording.

Training Denoise

Dialogue De-noise Plug-in. Dialogue De-noise plug-in is a simple, zero-latency denoiser ideal for achieving basic high-quality denoising on a variety of material (vocals and voice) with the minimum amount of time spent tweaking controls. The amount of denoising is determined by the noise threshold curve. Denoise is designed to reduce stationary noise, including broadband noise, in audio signals. Stationary noise can include tape hiss, microphone hum, power mains buzz, camera motor noise and other types of noise that do not change in level or spectral shape throughout the recording.

Denoise can learn the type of noise you want to remove from the recording to give you the best results. To train Denoise, identify a section of the recording that contains only noise, without any useful audio signal. Often these places are at the beginning or end of a file, but may also be during pauses or breaks in speech.

Select the longest section of noise you can find, then hit the Train button. This will 'teach' Denoise the noise profile of your file. In some cases you may not have a section of just noise, or you may want RX to find a quiet section for you. If this is the case, open the options menu next to the Train button (+) and choose Auto Train.

Denoising

After the noise profile is captured, select the whole file that needs to be denoised. You can also make a time-frequency selection to denoise only certain frequency regions of the file.

If you are using the Simple panel, you can adjust the desired amount of Noise suppression. If you are using Advanced panel, you can separately adjust amount of noise reduction for tonal and broadband parts of noise, and fine tune the noise reduction process with some additional parameters. Smoothing and Musical Noise Reduction

The Smoothing (Basic tab) and Musical Noise Reduction (Advanced tab) controls suppress artifacts that result from removing broadband noise. These artifacts are sometimes described as 'chirpy' or 'watery' sounds left behind during the noise reduction process. Increase the Smoothing or Musical Noise Reduction parameter to reduce these artifacts.

Choosing an Algorithm

RX's Denoise offers four algorithms that range in processing time. It is a good idea to start with Algorithm A, as it works very quickly. If you're not happy with the result, try B and then C or D, which will take longer to process but can yield better results. Algorithms B, C and D are fairly slow, and may not be able to preview in realtime. This is a good place to use the Compare Settings window to save time when comparing these options.

Adapt to changing noise profiles

This option will allow Denoise to alter its noise profile based on the incoming changing noisy audio. The specified learning time will allow RX to analyze incoming audio, decide what is noise and what is desired audio material, and adjust its noise profile accordingly. An incredibly powerful feature, adapting noise profiles can work well with noise sources that are constantly evolving particularly in post-production film settings or outdoor environments.

Sensitive microphones can bring out mechanical noises of the mouth which can be very distracting.

The new Mouth De-click module in iZotope RX 6 is a de-clicker that is finely tuned to detect and reduce mouth noises including clicks and lip smacks.

While this feature is designed for use on longer audio selections to fix entire passages at once, you can also use it to remove individual clicks.

Sibilance is the harsh high-frequency sounds that come from the letters S, F, X, SH, and a soft C. The new De-ess module in iZotope RX 6 attenuates or reduces sibilance in two modes: Classic and Spectral.

Classic Mode detects sibilants and attenuates them with a broadband gain envelope. Spectral Mode is more transparent, intelligent, and frequency-specific by only attenuating the high frequencies where sibilance is most active, thereby leaving the lower frequencies untouched.

Remove plosives with De-plosive

Plosives are strong blasts of air from letters such as P, T, K and B that impair the sound of your recording. They’re typically heard as low-end thumps between 20–300 Hz, though sometimes as high as 500 Hz.

iZotope’s RX 6 provides an improved De-plosive module to identify plosives, and then separate and remove them from the audio signal while preserving the fundamental frequency and harmonics of the dialogue.

Be sure to use De-plosive before filtering the audio at all. The function uses a frequency band between 20-80 Hz to detect plosives - so if a high-pass filter has already been applied, it is possible that plosive detection may not work correctly.

Address rumble and hiss with Corrective EQ

To help mitigate steady background noise even further, use the Corrective EQ module before using Dialogue Isolate to prepare the audio file for enhancement or restoration and allow the subject to be heard more clearly and prominently.

Use Corrective EQ to remove rumble from dialogue or cut distortion overtones to increase the intelligibility of your voiceover.

Below is an example of some production audio from a boom mic, but this method can just as easily be applied to background noise in a voiceover recording.
