Install Sims 4 On Mac Wine Skin

  • Not possible, because it is a different operating system.
Only Windows and OS X are supported.
You need to return the computer and get one that has either Windows or OS X.

Oh no! Are you sure because people were talking about something called 'Wine' as a way of installing the right software, but I'm not entirely sure what it is!

And do you know if there's anyway that I will be able to install that?
  • Not possible.
The only way that is most likely is purchasing a Windows license and installing Windows from there.

  • So I recently bought a new laptop for me and my sisters to play Sims 4 on. I had done loads of research on which laptops were the best (and most reasonably priced) for playing the Sims. I was so focused on getting the right processor and graphics card that I didn't even think about checking the laptop had Windows (crazy I know!) I didn't actually realise what Ubuntu was until I booted up the PC for the first time. So now I'm a bit stuck with this brand new laptop. I've done a bit of research and I know that there is a way of installing patches and different software in order to get Sims 4 working, but unfortunately none of the sites tell you how to do this in detail! PLEASE HELP!!

see video above and he has ubantu. Might want to ask that youtube user for help he posts some links under description

  • Wine is a Linux thing and wine doesn't do much or work very well. Not compatible with most games & doesn't work very well.
They wrap games in cider for Mac and that doesn't work very well but you can use it with most games. It's glitchy.
Mac has its own perfect native version of sims 4 different from the native version windows got. Either version is as glitchy as the other because of bugs. It's not just a port or 'lets wrap the PC version in cider'. PC or Mac are both amazing OS choices, altho it depends what you're used to and what your needs are.
Take it bac and get one with windows. Or you could get one with OS x (a Mac).
The reason one with Ubuntu is cheaper is because a) nobody wants it and b) Ubuntu is a free OS I believe (like Linux, I think Ubuntu is free). You could buy a copy of windows (7/8/8.1/10 all do the job) and install tht on it. You will never be able to game on Ubuntu, Linux or similar free (at least I think they're free) or cheap operating systems.

I researched it becuz you proved its probably possible and I found this link tht might be helpful: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2243117
Eta: The description of tht video (in your post) on YouTube explains they used crossover 14.0 and it appeared to run for them on Linux.

Running the Sims 4 on Linux is super easy! I used Crossover 14.0.3 and used the Sims 3 'bottle' as a template, installed the Sims 4 straight from Origin, and it worked right out of the box.
Recording the video did add a fair amount of overhead to the gpu and dropped the overall frame rate by about 10 fps. I set the video resolution to 720p and the game ran very smooth. The Sims 4 is *very* playable on Linux.
Keep in mind that I used Crossover 14 to run the Sims 4, NOT Wine or Play On Linux. I have no idea if the Sims 4 will run with plain ol' Wine or Play On Linux.
Update - You can try and run the Sims 4 using Wine but you'll have to follow some pretty involved steps. Sims 4 does NOT currently work 'out of the box' with Wine or Play On Linux - https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.ph..

*watches video to understand better* yeh I saw the description after I posted on this thread.. Then I made another post.
Idk why but I prefer to read descriptions of videos than watch them.. I thought you couldn't game on ubuntu/Linux but I guess I was wrong.. Ty for telling me about a way you can play on Linux/Ubuntu. I don't know much about Linux but I don't really like it much.. I would be going off topic if I said why I don't use Linux, I'll say it looks like a version of windows xp that has been serverly cut down. (I could play some games on windows xp if I wanted at least.. I'd have tons of old games & sims 4. Barely any new games work on it but I know sims 4 does)

Your welcome. I dont know anything about ubuntu/linux so I googled to see if anyone had an answer.
  • Try going to computer shop and upgrading your laptop to any Windows 7 and up? I think they can do that

  • Is there anyway you can return the laptop?
Or maybe you can bring the laptop to a computer shop and see if they can change the Operating System to Windows?

  • I really don't understand what everyone's issue is: Sims 4 runs just fine on Ubuntu.
Just make sure you have the latest graphics drivers from your vendor (Just like with windows).
Then install Wine simply by typing this into the command window:
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 (This enables 32bit support in wine.) Then type:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:wine/wine-builds (This adds the repository for wine so it updates automatically unlike windows where you have to download a new version of an application manually from the website every-time)
Then update the overall repository to include wine: sudo apt-get update (Almost done)
Then lastly type to install: sudo apt-get install --install-recommends winehq-devel (All done)
That's it one done you can even go into your settings and set wine to autorun any cds and/or exe files to start automatically and windows based applications and games will install as normally as they would on a Windows PC.
Here is a link so you can see that Sims 4 runs just fine on Ubuntu with wine: appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=33219&sAllBugs
